Byzantine Fresco Chapel and Gallery

The 1997 Byzantine Fresco Chapel and Gallery housed two thirteenth-century frescos originating from the Greek Orthodox Church of Cyprus. With the agreement of the church, the Menil Foundation restored and displayed the frescos in a replica of the church, encased by a 4,000sf building. The interior glass chapel was proportioned to evoke the original in Cyprus, with a “necklace” of steel rods tensioned between the floor and roof. In 2012 GNA created a plan to safely dismantle the chapel for the frescos’ return to the Church of Cyprus.
