Calder Gardens
Calder Gardens is an 18,000sf new museum exhibiting a rotating selection of works held by the Calder Foundation. The building consists of a series of interior and exterior galleries below grade accessed from an at-grade, unassuming, single-story, steel-framed “shed” that holds the lobby, museum shop, and service functions. The cast-in-place concrete below grade structure consists of retaining walls, interior buttress walls, and sparse intermediate columns that support concrete framed slabs at the ground level. Several of these framed slabs, including above the main gallery space where beams span 60ft clear, support exterior landscaped sculpture areas above with significant loads. Due to potential flooding in an extreme rain event from the adjacent Vine Street Expressway, the retaining walls and below grade mat slabs are designed to resist uplift forces caused by hydrostatic pressure.
Calder Gardens is anticipated to open in fall 2025.
