Jeong-Dong Building

The redesign of the Jeong-Dong Building adjacent to Deosku Palace included a renovation of the original 1974 office tower and the addition of a new wing. The 11-story wing is structurally isolated from the existing tower and is framed in steel with concrete on metal deck slabs. A cast-in-place concrete basement structure provides 5 levels of below grade parking.

GNA’s study of the loading requirements for the existing 20-story tower structure indicated that its existing moment frames would be inadequate in a code maximum seismic event. To address this, the structural renovation work included augmenting the lateral system with steel braced frames to resist lateral loads without the use of interior moment frames. The renovation also removed the existing cast-in-place concrete spandrels at each level to facilitate installation of a new all-glazed curtain wall and replaced the existing eastern stair core shear walls with structural steel braced frames to open the view to the east.
