Moody Amphitheater at Waterloo Greenway
The Moody Amphitheater is an outdoor music and performing arts venue, carefully integrated with the renovated park landscape. The amphitheater’s focal point is a 20,000sf steel canopy composed of alternating layers of stacked I-beams, arranged in a denser pattern over the stage and feathered at the edges. The canopy’s structural scheme sculpturally satisfies the high stage loading requirements with a “cloud” of over 2,000 individual steel and aluminum members, supported on slender rectangular steel columns, concealing the two-way grillage of fabricated steel trusses. The canopy provides shelter to a cast-in-place concrete stage and venue support facility. The support facility’s exposed concrete walls follow the site’s curved geometry and topography. The framed concrete roof structure carries the high loading of the canopy and green roof above and incorporates mechanical systems.
