SoHo Cascade Stair
This stair represents a revival of the “cantilever stair” where treads overlap so the load on any tread cascades down to those below. The wall from which the treads extend carries the resulting torque. In this instance, the stair system uses 64in by 6in steel tubes risers, aluminum plate treads, and a perforated triple layer laminated and tempered glass wall to resist torque. The risers carry the cascade torque into the glass through an aluminum U-shaped stirrup that bears on three sides on Delrin wedges.
