The Frick Collection Facility Renovation and Expansion

The renovation and expansion of the Frick Collection unifies the museum’s previous renovations and expands its educational, conservational, and administrative resources. It includes 60,000sf of renovated and repurposed space and 18,000sf of new construction. In collaboration with Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, GNA assessed the structure of the existing buildings and developed strategies for renovating and expanding. The solutions address the tight site conditions, extensive below grade excavation, and desired seamless museum experience. The complex framing of the historic Frick Reference Art Library required specific analysis to develop a strategy for introducing new framing adjacent to and within it. Additionally, many historic interior finishes cannot be disturbed, necessitating innovative structural solutions to integrate new and existing spaces.
